In 1869, Elliott County was established from land given by Carter, Lawrence, and Morgan counties. After a fire at the courthouse in 1957 resulted in the destruction of many county records, therefore, leaving the history of the county to be turned into ashes. At a square mileage of 235 square miles, it is home to 7,508 residents.
