The county was founded in 1834 and named after the American Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, who is also known as the “Swamp Fox”. Formed off of land from Washington County, Marion County is the state of Kentucky’s most catholic county with catholic settlers coming from Kentucky to Holy Cross from the counties western circa in 1790. Sitting at a total area of 347 sqaure miles, it is home to 19,404 residents.
