Crittenden County

Crittenden County is located on the Ohio and Tradewater Rivers in the southwest region of Kentucky. The county was created by the state legislature on April 1, 1842, coming from a portion of Livingston County. Once established, it became the state’s 91st county and was named for John J Crittenden who was a former U.S. senator, attorney general, and governor of Kentucky. According to records, it measures out at 371 square miles, only a mere 8,915 residents call Crittenden County, KY home.

 

Cumberland County

Cumberland County was created in 1798 from land given by Green County.  Named after the Cumberland River, the 688-mile major waterway that runs between southern Kentucky and central Tennessee. According to the most recent census bureau, the county sits at 311 square miles and has over 6,500 residents.

 

Daviess County

Named after former a Major Attorney for the United States (Joseph Hamilton Daviess), the county was established in January of 1815. The original courthouse was burned 50 years after the counties establishment however, a lot of the original records were transferred and saved by the church. At a square mileage of 477 square miles, it is home to over 100,000 residents.

 

Edmonson County

Edmonson County was established on January 12, 1825, from land given by Grayson, Hart, and Warren counties and is home to Mammoth Cave National Park. Measured at 308  square miles, it is home to over 12,000 residents.

 

Elliot County

In 1869, Elliott County was established from land given by Carter, Lawrence, and Morgan counties. After a fire at the courthouse in 1957 resulted in the destruction of many county records, therefore, leaving the history of the county to be turned into ashes. At a square mileage of 235 square miles, it is home to 7,508 residents.

 

Estill County

Estill County was formed in 1808 from land given by Clark and Madison counties and became Kentucky’s 15th county. Named after James Estill and sitting at 256 square miles, Estill County is home of 14,198 residents including country music rising star Tyler Childers and his wife Senora May Childers.

 

Fayette County

Fayette County was formed in 1780 when the Virginia General Assembly partitioned off into Kentucky County which then abolished and was separated into three different counties: Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln. Together, these counties and those setting off from them later in that decade separated from Virginia in 1792 to become the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Lexington did not become the county seat for Fayette County until 1974. Sitting at 286 square miles, Fayette County is home to the 62nd largest city in the U.S. and 323,152 residents.

Fleming County

Fleming County was first established in 1798 from land given by Mason County. The first courthouse that may have possibly been made of logs, was replaced in 1830 and again in 1952 thus losing records and files of the counties’ history in the process. Named after former and early Kentucky settler John Fleming and sitting at 351 square miles, Fleming County is home to 14,581 residents.
